Inventors and Patents From the City of Pasadena

The City of Pasadena, California has an impressive list of Inventors and Patents. The city is also home to many technological companies, including Idealab and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

These inventions include a hand pump made from all plastic to a piston with an integrated check valve. The patent has been titled as “All plastic hand pump with a piston having an integrated check valve” and registered as Patent No. US 11,389,814 B1.

Pasadena is aslo home to many other inventions including, the Mars Rover, DNA Sequencer, CMOS Semiconductor and the Richter Scale which was developed in 1935 by Charles Richter of the California Institute of Technology as a means to measure the magnitude or strength of earthquakes.

Pasadena is also credited with inventing the Cheeseburger when in 1924, teenaged Lionel Sternberger put cheese on a hamburger and sold it to a delighted customer, The Rite Spot, at 1500 West Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. In fact on January 5, 2017, the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and LA Financial Credit Union unveiled a plaque commemorating the invention of the cheeseburger by young Mr. Sternberger.

Contributions

Some notable individuals from Pasadena include Dr. Meredith Groudine, who was born in New Jersey in 1929 and later studied at Cornell University. Later, he earned his Ph.D. in engineering science from the California Institute of Technology, where he worked on the development of a technology called electrogasdynamics. The technology, developed by Groudine, allows for the conversion of natural gas into electricity. It also has numerous applications in refrigeration and can reduce pollution from smoke. He holds more than 40 patents and is a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Inventors should consider their options before publicly disclosing their invention. Generally, an inventor has twelve months from the date of public disclosure to file a U.S. patent application. In other jurisdictions, disclosures are considered prior art, so it is better to file for patent protection as early as possible.
