If you live in the State of Hawaii and are in need of free patent filing assistance, there are many sources that can help you. Some of these resources include the St. Louis University, Veterans Business Outreach Center, and YWCA O’ahu. These organizations specialize in helping entrepreneurs start businesses and patent their innovations.

St. Louis University

The Saint Louis University (SLU) has a program to assist financially-under-resourced inventors apply for patents. The free program provides access to patent attorneys and agents, as well as entrepreneurial support and commercialization guidance. It serves solo inventors, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses in Missouri.

Another resource for free intellectual property help is the St. Louis Public Library, which has been designated as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Staff members have expertise in using patent and trademark search engines such as PubEAST and PubWEST. These tools can help with patent research, including searching from 1790 to the current week.

The Patent Pro Bono Program pairs volunteer patent attorneys with under-resourced inventors and small businesses. Eligibility requirements vary by state, but they typically require a low-income household. To qualify, applicants must be residents of one or more states, and have gross household incomes that are no more than three times the federal poverty level. There are also regional programs that may have different eligibility requirements.

Veterans Business Outreach Center

The Veterans Business Outreach Center of Hawaii is a small business development center that offers entrepreneurial assistance and services for veterans, service members, and Hawaii residents. The center is funded by the Small Business Administration, which is a federal agency that helps small businesses succeed through education and mentoring.

The Center also provides free trademark and patent search assistance. It matches volunteer patent professionals with entrepreneurs and inventors who need help patenting their ideas. To qualify, applicants must have a low-income income and be a resident of one or more states. Some regional centers have different eligibility criteria.

YWCA O’ahu

To support women entrepreneurs, the YWCA O’ahu has partnered with the Coca-Cola Foundation. The YWCA is a national entrepreneurial advocate and resource for women looking to start or expand a business. The Honolulu Library and Reading Room Association was established on March 8, 1879. It is located at 111 Fort Street and had 300-400 volumes. Its ceilings were 16 feet high, with a skylight overhead. The library’s staff and volunteers helped the community find the books they needed.

Patsy T. Mink Center for Business & Leadership at YWCA O’ahu
